Why Image Matters
Oct 30, 2022My career has taught me plenty of things: confidence, patience, integrity, and passion only begin to cover it. After decades of experience, going from website design to personal branding, I realized that one major thing is why image matters - is because people will judge you no matter what, even they say they won't.
Your image is the sum of all information about yourself, both online and in real life. All this information creates your brand, and whether you like it or not, it controls other people’s opinions about you. The narrative your image makes sends a message to everyone who interacts with you – both business and personal. These messages are communicated not just through your appearance, but through your actions, your speech, and your lifestyle. Everything you say and do communicates something about yourself. Everything contributes to your external image and it's why image matters so much.
This isn’t as daunting as it seems! Being aware of the narrative our image creates is the first step to OWNING it. The truth is, it’s within human nature to judge based on what we see and hear; it’s evolutionary, biological, and natural. Our judgment helped our species survive for so long– there’s no shame in it! Humans are visual creatures for a reason, and by understanding that, you can utilize it.
Tactically using your image to draw in your intended audience is key; if you want your message to be taken seriously by certain groups of people, then you must hone it. Don't worry – it's easier than you think!
A successful personal image can usually be described in five ways:
Inspiring: Creates enthusiasm and makes people feel empowered
Memorable: Stands out from the crowd for the RIGHT reasons
Approachable: Is open, communicates clearly, and makes people feel comfortable around you
Genuine: Shows the unique, charming, REAL you
Engaging: Fosters lasting relationships and allows people to commit to you
Why image matters:
We know that making a good first impression is important, especially in business. Customers will create an impression of your business and brand based on these factors. Call it superficial, but these small details are ways you can actually connect with potential customers. In this case, presentation is everything. Adjusting your online image to be more authentic to you and your message is the first step to guaranteeing success for your business!
Of course, the quality of your service or product is also important, but you first draw in an audience, you must have your branding perfected. Be intentional about your brand image and build it from there – you got this!
